The Ministry of Agriculture and Water held tomorrow in Abanilla (at 18:00 pm in the hall of the building of the Knights) a technical workshop on traditional and alternative woody crops, which aims to improve and diversify agricultural production area, thus responding to the concerns of producers.
The conference, which opened the Director General of Food Industry and Agricultural Training, Angel Garcia Lidon, with the participation of professionals in areas related to the production of pomegranate, pistachio and almond growing techniques geared to maximum water .
Lidón Garcia stressed that "diversify agricultural production in the area will expand the volume and period of activity of the food companies with complementary to traditional products and create jobs."
In this regard, he added that "the fruit sector in Spain is experiencing a profound renewal in search of higher returns."
The CEO explained that "improvements are achieved by the introduction of new varieties in some cases, the introduction of new species and the adoption of systems of production and cultivation techniques designed to increase the final value of production" .
Abanilla is one of the driest areas of Spain, with an area of ​​4,491 hectares woody crops, 50 percent spread between dry and irrigated.
The predominant crops are almonds (1,240 ha), vines for winemaking (1,098 ha), lemon (733 ha) and olives for oil (709 ha).
In the area of ​​irrigated citrus fruit are grown.
