The general manager of Consumer Affairs, Commerce and Handicrafts, María Dolores Alarcon, along with the mayor of Abanilla, Fernando Molina, today inaugurated the Fourth Regional Meeting of Artisans Hilo, which meets in this city some 200 lace makers and embroiderers from all over Spain.
The meeting, organized by the Ministry of Universities, Business and Research, in collaboration with the City and Crafts Association's Thread of the municipality aims to restore this traditional craft.
The artisans involved in this activity, which is held in the Town Hall Square, belong to a total of 18 associations and embroidery bobbin, among which are several regional and other nearby provinces like Alicante and Albacete.
These craftsmen come together in Abanilla fourth consecutive year to show their ability in the techniques of needlepoint, bobbin lace, crochet, tatting or lace mesh with the drawing up all kinds of household items and accessories for women .
The general manager of Consumer Affairs, Commerce and Handicrafts explained that this regional meeting "started as a tribute to a profession that in the region was declared endangered in 2002."
However, "thanks to the efforts of the municipal corporation, special awareness to the local trade and craft initiatives, is making his recovery and value," said Alarcon.
During the meeting, the calendar established by the artisans of this craft and that each year brings a greater number of partnerships, conduct demonstrations of various techniques of lace and embroidery, and offers the interested public the opportunity to test their ability in the art of thread.
Alarcon said that this initiative "is part of the policy of promoting the craft that carries out the regional government offices to recover endangered species, disseminated to society and to encourage new generations to start in these jobs."
