The Ministry of Agriculture and Water has installed a trapping network in place 'The Jaira' in the municipality of Abanilla, to prevent the spread of the plague of red palm weevil, but warns that the risk is low, and that winter temperatures hinder the flight of this insect.

Technical Plant Health Service inspected the site yesterday after being denounced the existence of a deposit of plant remains including red palm weevil infested.

The Ministry opened an information accountability for the company responsible for the collection of these remains, which lacks the required authorization from the region.

He also ordered the immediate removal and proper management of litter, which will be transported in closed trucks to a crushing plant for later burning.

The Director General of Operations and Training Modernization of Agricultural Lidón Angel Garcia stressed that the Ministry is working with the City Council of this town since April 2009, "in order to prevent the development of this pest in a palm grove is as emblematic as Abanilla. "

Plant Protection Service routinely carries out surveys in the palm of that environment from the disappearance of the first palm red weevil affected by the above date.

In 2010 were removed 3 palms infested.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Water advises individuals, businesses, maintenance and waste management, the removal of infected material palms should be done by authorized companies.

Otherwise, the Plant Protection Act provides for penalties of between 3,000 and 30,000 euros.
