The emergency work carried out by the Ministry of Water, Agriculture and Environment at the Abanilla landfill has prevented the recent rainfall from causing adverse effects.
The director of Environmental Quality and Evaluation, Encarna Molina, who visited the site yesterday, said that "the work carried out during this year has achieved stabilization of the slopes of the discharge vessels, avoiding the slippage and collapse of different parts of the Landfill and the consequent rupture of vessels ".
He added that "the sealing of waste masses with layers of clay material and polyethylene sheets in the different vessels was executed at 90 percent, which has allowed to prevent the infiltration of rainwater in the mass of waste and increase Again the volume of leachate inside the landfill and the consequent destabilization of the land. "
The director-general, accompanied by the technical management of the works, found that the automatic leachate collection system and the built-up pumping systems have worked correctly, which has prevented, in only three days, 1,506,000 liters of leachate. Poured into the adjacent public channels, which run to the Oriolana hamlet of La Murada.
These have been stored in the safety leach raft, with a capacity above 54,000 cubic meters.
This reservoir, which currently stores 10.5 million liters of leachate, is at 20 percent capacity.
Under normal conditions, 150 cubic meters per day from the automatic leachate collection system are pumped daily.
During the rains of the past days this figure has increased to 1,500 cubic meters.
In addition, more than 40,000 tons of biostabilizer material collected at the composting plant near the site have been valued in the emergency actions, thus avoiding the leaching of these wastes to the ravines of the eastern part of the installations and the Contamination of public channels.
Continuation of work
Encarna Molina described the actions carried out to date as "very effective" to control the risks in the Sierra de Abanilla.
However, he stressed the need to complete the sealing work with geotextile and polyethylene in some areas, as well as revegetation and construction of ditches, as planned, as surface runoff has led to gullies, material haulings and surface leachate Which have been contained in part by the drainage systems and executed safety dikes.
At present, the existing risks at the site are kept under control, but work must be continued until its complete elimination.
The budget for the next year 2017 provides for a specific project for the sealing and restoration of the Abanilla landfill, to deal with the actions that are being carried out, within the subsidiary execution with charge to the mercantile Proambiente, to eliminate the Imminent risks to the safety of people and the environment.
The director general recalled that a management charge is being processed, for an amount of more than 57,000 euros, for the execution of the project to minimize risks by cooling, transfer and conditioning of non-hazardous waste and complementary actions in Abanilla, which Will run in coordination with the Valencian Community.
