Murcia is one of the autonomous communities with the largest production area of this citrus
The production of lime in the Region of Murcia has grown more than 25 percent since 2015. This citrus is grown on 54 hectares, with a production of 530 tons last year, which means that the Region of Murcia is one of the autonomous communities with the largest production area in the country.
This product is expanding more and more in the national territory and about 17 percent is exported outside Spain, with a value of about 120,000 euros, with France and Canada as the main destinations.
The Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Miguel Angel del Amor, today visited a farm of limes, which are in the middle of harvesting campaign in Abanilla, and untied that "this farm reflects the adaptation of farmers to climate change with crops like the lime, mandarin, orange, lemon and pomegranate, in addition, the sale prices are very good and all this, together with a growing demand, makes the limes a very attractive product ".
The commercialization takes place from the first weeks of August and until the middle of October.
In this way, the gap is covered from the end of the Verna lemon campaign to the start of the harvest of Fine lime.
The counselor stressed that "the strong demand of consumers of this citrus is causing the European market to request more and more Spanish lime against the South American, thanks to its higher quality and better health guarantee."
One of the main characteristics of the limes is its intense and powerful aroma, as well as the flavor, depending on the acid or sweet varieties, which makes it an appetizing product and which is increasing its cultivation expectations.
It is a species sensitive to the salinity of soils, which develops in stony, shallow and with little organic matter.
For this reason, the areas of southeastern Spain are suitable for the planting of limes.
